With the introduction of AirTrain between JFK airport terminals and the opening of the station at Federal Circle, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey took the opportunity to centralize a number of airport car rental offices. Due to the familiarity of the company with Port Authority and procedures, and their experiences with flight and car rental facilities, GLA was commissioned to design the building to the Consolidated Budget, National and Dollar Rent-A-Car customer offices.

The hotel is situated directly opposite the platform for the AirTrain station stop the project, through the elimination of shuttle vans and rental of offices, leading to a faster commute between the airport terminals and the rental offices, reduced traffic on the airport roads, better air quality and a modern, comfortable facility for customers to provide rental cars.

"The consolidated car rental building projects includes not only the" construction "related challenges, from the vicinity of the AirTrain facilities, but" people "issues on the number of customers, the parent company and owner representatives," said Steve Lewent, AIA, GLA Partner and project manager.

"Our design team is very experienced in managing projects of this kind, with the technical issues as well as numerous client communications programs. "

The new consolidated rental office building balances style and functionality at a relatively modest budget. The design is clean and sleek, the foreign and used corrugated flat aluminum plates and an inviting glass-front entrance. Through the inventive use of colors, counters, flooring, wall materials and lighting for the interior, GLA was able to offer any car rental company offers a unique and attractive space that blends into a cohesive building.

Although we assume the project is simple, there are several construction challenges. Tall piledrivers requires special permits from the Port Authority and the 48-hour notification prior to permit the use of the AirTrain detour. Use of cranes over 80 "requires high clearance from the Federal Aviation Authority because of the proximity to the flight routes.

The lack of reliable mapping of existing underground electrical lines and gas pipelines in the site has necessitated some delays in these utilities are relocated to bases and foundations. Because of the Consolidated Car Rental Building close to the AirTrain, the building code required for the front facade to two hours fire rated. GLA, a special flood the sprinkler system along the front, without which almost all-glass facade would not have been possible.

Car centralization of office space in a building that the car lot, gas stations and service buildings for the various car rental companies would also need to redesign or modification. GLA is currently working with budget and the national to the reorganization and rationalization of facilities and traffic flow and to improve customer movement between the office and the car lot.
