Despite his silence, Caruso is no stranger to disputes and controversies. Now 65, he gives little thought to be easier.

He fought in a world war and endure. He has fought the giants of the industry and won. It is part of a nationwide car rental company controversy and survived. Now that he maintained his Los Angeles-based private companies in the fourth largest in its industry, he is determined to stay where he is, to enjoy.

"" I do not see how I am from, I do not see me behind this desk, "he says. "" There are a variety of industries and a lot of people who have a lot of success in a shorter time than we have. It's us 20 years to that date. But it is rewarding, the challenge is still there. ""

For Caruso, the 10-or-so miles from his childhood home Silverlake Beverly Hills was an indirect way. The journey began for him in Pennsylvania but Mediterranean origin.

Earning opportunities in the landscaping business is tough in the winter doldrums that descend for months over the Mid-Atlantic states. So in the mid-1920s August Caruso, Henry's father, moved west to create a life for his family.

The Carusos and their three sons - Henry, Albert and Lawrence - initially in a part of the East Los Angeles, but soon permanently in Silverlake. Caruso says they instilled stubborn immigrants in their sons.

In his youth Caruso delighted at the Medical College, but he is not sure whether he would now be liquidated as a doctor.

"I just wanted an education," he says. "" That's the thing that was always in our heads driven by our parents. Whether I become a doctor, or whatever it was, I just wanted an education. "

To ensure that education Caruso, whose family income as "modest," "work at an early age." "I worked in a grocery store, food delivered, and have all the small tasks as 16 - or 17-year-old in a shop ', "he says.

The money in the food business helped when it was time for Caruso to the University of Southern California. He continued to work in class as he, but his study of medicine was soon interrupted - World War II was declared.

Make that money to his first entry in the automotive industry, the buying and selling of cars, so close at the end of the Second World War. He was so good he never returned to the school. Caruso's first automobile dealer in Los Angeles and eventually their number to five.

Although he still owns the Long Beach dealer in the mid-1960s, Caruso found another field that fascinates him - Car Rental.

Caruso of the reasons for a commitment not only on the center industry potential for profitability and growth, he admits.

"I wanted something I would have some control over it instead of someone else," he says.

By the time dollar had five locations and started franchising its stores, Caruso took his plans for the construction of his company frustrated. The only way to really expand, he found, was to branches in the national airports.

But the "big three" car hire, Hertz, Avis and National, a quasi-monopoly on the airport sites, says Caruso. His determination, growth, led him to fight it probably the biggest fight of his career.

In the early 1970s Caruso lawsuit against the three car rental companies, and then the Federal Trade Commission in the action. The legal action against the agreements reached between the company and the national airport. It led to an agreement, which prohibited any practices that discriminate against small businesses compete for airport locations.

"" I think it was the fact that I met so much resistance. That is probably what kept me go, "he says. "" I have so much resistance that I am determined not to let that stop me. ""

Dollars in the last year, it was even more growth. The company, which has marketing agreements with European companies for over 11 years, has signed an agreement with the United Kingdom's Swan-national companies. The pact U.S. dollars positioned as the world's largest privately owned car rental company, Caruso notes.

Caruso says the transaction with a value of almost U.S. $ 500 million in additional revenue to the current dollars per year had a turnover of around 400 million U.S. Dollar, the migration of the company's domestic and foreign sales to well over 1 billion U.S. dollar until the year 1992, the year trade barriers fall in most parts of Europe.
